Pastor Louis: God loves diversity!
I just got home from Puerto Rico. I was visiting my 94-year-old, very ill father at the hospital. I have been praying for his healing, and I have also been praying for a good death, as he has lived a full life with integrity and strength.
As I got home from Puerto Rico, I was delighted that I had received in my mail the children’s book written by Esau McCauley and illustrated by LaTonya Jackson titled Josey Johnson’s Hair and the Holy Spirit. I am more delighted and surprised now that I read the book, hearing the character Josey ask questions about her hair and about God. The father character shares with his daughter the wonders of God’s creativity and dignity bestowed on his creatures.
I cannot think of a better book for us to read to get into the inside of a Christian family that struggles as a minority in a diverse and sometimes uncaring community. I think all families, especially those that are not African American, should read the book to their children… It will immerse your and your children’s imagination into another’s different, often difficult, but also delightful world.
I love Josey. She has blessed me. May she also bless you into a Christian imagination that includes and loves others!
